FEU offers data science and business analytics courses

Far Eastern University (FEU) Institute of Technology will offer majors in Data Science, Business Analytics, Innovation, and Business starting this academic year.

The courses are BS Computer Science majoring in Data Science, BS Information Technology majoring in Innovation and Business, and BS Information Technology majoring in Business Analytics.

This year, the FEU Tech schools, consisting of FEU Alabang, FEU Diliman and FEU Institute of Technology, were recognized among the World Real Impact Universities (WURI) Best Innovative Global Universitieswhich ranks science and technology programs according to their societal impact.

“All fields will need data science,” said Hadji J. Tejuco, an instructor at FEU Tech’s College of Computer Studies and Multimedia Arts. “It’s the only way to process data to provide solutions to complex problems,” he added at an Aug. 2 event hosted by FEU Tech. “The data entered into the system can help us make future projections [too].”

Data science – the collection, preparation and analysis of data – is related to artificial intelligence (AI), which is the technology that enables machines to understand and make intelligent decisions, and machine learning , which are algorithms that help machines improve through supervised and unsupervised methods. learning.

These three elements are at the origin of applications such as the voice recognition capabilities of virtual assistants, the web showcases personalized for each buyer and patient health monitoring via wearable devices.

“The idea is to perform results-driven calculations on the data to gain insights for business and research,” Tejuco said.

“Data is your bread and butter,” added Geliza Marie I. Alcober, another FEU Tech instructor at the College of Computer Studies and Multimedia Arts.

Disneyland, she pointed out, uses business analytics to give them an idea of a customer’s favorite Disney character.

“It allows them to make sure your favorite Disney character interacts with you at Disneyland,” she said. “You don’t need magic to create something magical.”

According to Rolan Marco U. Garcia, chief innovation officer of FEU Tech Group and director of new ventures, the school “puts its money where its mouth is” and invests in its students’ startup ideas with an internal fund.

“We look at the problems that these startups want to solve. All innovations start with that,” he said. “[Then] we are looking for validity and scalability.

Students struggling with the math needed to study data science can seek help from iCare, FEU’s free tutorial system.

The Philippines ranked second in mathematics among 79 economies that participated in the Program for International Student Assessment, a global study conducted in 2018 by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development that examined students’ knowledge of reading, mathematics and science .
